After achieving a First Class degree in genetics at Sheffield University, and a PhD at Leicester University, Mary joined the pharmaceutical industry in 1990. Over the next 3 years, she worked in regulatory affairs for Rhone-Poulenc Rorer and Fisons Pharmaceuticals and gained an excellent grounding in the industry.
Mary then worked as a Medical Writer and Editorial Manager for Adelphi Communications and Complete Medical Communications, before joining Prime Medica in 1999 as Editorial Director. At Prime Medica, Mary was responsible for setting up and developing the editorial department from two medical writers to over forty staff. She was a member of the senior management team responsible for company strategy and policy.
In 2007, as part of a lifestyle change, Mary established An Sgriobhadair to provide a personal service in professional medical and scientific writing and communications consultancy.
